According to the 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 40% of Lancaster County Youth have tried smoking – that’s a 21% decrease since 1999. The majority of Lincoln’s young people don’t smoke. The Lincoln and Lancaster County community counts on youth to take a stand to prevent tobacco use.

What is an advocate?

  • An advocate works to change the “what is” to the “what should be.” Anti-tobacco advocates question policies, work with the community to find solutions and raise issues related to young people and tobacco use.
  • Youth in Lincoln and Lancaster County have promoted Nebraska’s Clean Indoor Air Act, participated in tobacco compliance checks and worked with local policy-makers on reducing tobacco signage at convenience stores.

  • Work with the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department and law enforcement to reduce the sale of tobacco to minors.
