Lighting Up Lancaster County for Mental Health Awareness

Every May, Tobacco Free Lancaster County joins the Mental Health Association of Nebraska and the Lancaster County Prevention Coalition to reduce stigma and show support for those facing mental health challenges.

What Is the Green Light Project?

The Green Light Project is part of Mental Health America’s nationwide “Light Up Green” initiative, celebrated every May during Mental Health Awareness Month.

The idea is beautifully simple: individuals and businesses across Nebraska swap out a porch light or spotlight for a green bulb. This small, visible act sends a powerful message of solidarity—showing everyone in your community that you support those affected by mental health challenges.

Tobacco Free Lancaster County has proudly partnered in this campaign for the third consecutive year alongside the Mental Health Association of Nebraska and the Lancaster County Prevention Coalition (Talk Heart 2 Heart).

Did You Know? Americans will experience a mental health condition this year. Nearly half will struggle with a diagnosable condition in their lifetime. Many suffer needlessly due to stigma—but together, we can change that.

🔗 Mental Health & Nicotine Are Linked

People with mental health conditions smoke at higher rates. Research shows that quitting tobacco can actually improve symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression.

How to Participate

Getting involved is easy and meaningful. Here are three ways to show your support this May:



Light Up Green

Replace a porch light or spotlight with a green bulb to show your solidarity. Businesses can illuminate storefronts, signs, or building exteriors.
