Supporting Mental Health Awareness in Lancaster County: The Green Light Project

Uncategorized

This May, we invite local businesses and community members to join us in the #GreenLightProjectNE, a powerful initiative we’re proud to support for the third consecutive year. In partnership with the Mental Health Association of Nebraska and the Lancaster County Prevention Coalition (Talk Heart 2 Heart), we’re working to shine a light on mental health and break down the stigma that too often prevents people from seeking help.

What Is the Green Light Project?

The Green Light Project is part of Mental Health America’s nationwide “Light Up Green” initiative during Mental Health Awareness Month. The concept is simple but meaningful: individuals and businesses throughout Nebraska illuminate their homes and buildings with green lights during May. This visible display of solidarity shows support for those facing mental health challenges and sends a clear message that our community cares.

How to Participate in Mental Health Awareness Month

Getting involved is easy and impactful. Here’s how you can show your support:

Light up green. Replace a porch light or spotlight with a green bulb to show your solidarity. Businesses can illuminate storefronts, signs, or building exteriors.

Display a yard sign. Let your neighbors know you stand with those affected by mental health challenges.

Spread the word on social media. Share supportive messages and photos using #GreenLightProjectNE to help the movement grow.

Complimentary green light bulbs and yard signs are available while supplies last at the Mental Health Association of Nebraska office located at 1500 S 70th St., STE 201 in Lincoln.

The Connection Between Nicotine and Mental Health

Throughout this campaign, we’ll be sharing valuable information about how nicotine affects mental health. Research shows that quitting tobacco can actually improve symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, people with mental health conditions smoke at higher rates, making cessation support especially important. We encourage everyone to explore healthy, supportive coping strategies for improved mental well-being.

Our work is funded by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services through the Tobacco Free Nebraska Program as a result of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement.
