One in five Americans will experience a mental health condition this year, and nearly half will struggle with a diagnosable condition in their lifetime. That’s why it’s critical to prioritize mental health, destigmatize seeking support, and promote available resources. This May, we’re proud to partner once again with the Mental Health Association of Nebraska and the Lancaster County Prevention Coalition for the #GreenLightProjectNE campaign.
Why Mental Health and Tobacco Use Are Connected
Many individuals facing mental health challenges turn to nicotine products as a coping mechanism. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, people with mental health conditions smoke cigarettes at rates two to four times higher than the general population. While tobacco may seem to provide temporary relief from stress or anxiety, the cycle of addiction actually worsens symptoms and increases health risks over time.
The good news? Quitting nicotine can lead to meaningful improvements in mental health. Research shows that people who stop using tobacco often experience reduced anxiety, improved mood, and better overall well-being.
Free Quit Resources Are Available
If you or someone you know is ready to quit nicotine, free support is just a phone call away. The Nebraska Tobacco Quitline offers confidential coaching, personalized quit plans, and in some cases, free nicotine replacement therapy. Simply call (800) QUIT-NOW to get started.
