Protecting Lancaster County Students from Vaping and Nicotine Addiction

Vapes & Flavored Tobacco

Youth vaping has become a public health concern across the nation, but in Lancaster County, Nebraska, we’re taking proactive steps to protect students. In partnership with the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department, we’re implementing innovative tobacco prevention programs in schools throughout the region.

School-Based Vaping Prevention Programs Expand Across Lancaster County

One of our most visible initiatives involves mirror clings—vibrant displays featuring vaping facts and quit resources placed in school restrooms. This campaign has now reached 35 schools across Lincoln and Lancaster County, including Southeast Community College, Pius, Norris, Waverly, Malcolm, and Raymond Central. By meeting students where they are, these educational materials provide accessible information about the risks of nicotine addiction.

Evidence-Based Tobacco Education Curriculum for Elementary and Middle Schools

We’ve developed comprehensive lesson plans aligned with health education standards, currently under review by Lincoln Public Schools for classroom use. These materials address vaping myths, help students navigate peer pressure, and support healthy decision-making from an early age. The curriculum includes ready-to-teach lessons, interactive activities, educational posters, and resources for parents—creating a community-wide approach to prevention.

Safe Vape Disposal Protects Students and Staff

Recognizing the practical challenges schools face, we’ve equipped Lincoln Public Schools’ middle and high schools with vape disposal kits. According to the CDC, e-cigarettes contain nicotine and other harmful substances that pose health risks. These disposal kits help protect students and staff from nicotine exposure while also addressing lithium-battery fire hazards that improperly discarded vapes can create.

Resources Available for Parents, Educators, and Community Members

Schools can request presentations for staff, parents, and students covering tobacco prevention strategies and quitting resources. Our partnership with School Community Intervention and Prevention ensures these efforts reach those who need them most. For those looking to quit, the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline offers free support services.

This important work is funded by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services through Tobacco Free Nebraska.
